What are dental implants?
Dental implants are restorations made of titanium, a metal that is biocompatible with the human body. They appear as small posts or screws that are placed into the bone of the jaw during oral surgery. They stimulate the natural process of bone growth, called osseointegration, which fuses the implant to the bone. Once the dental implant is firmly in place, the dentist can restore the abutment of the dental implant with a crown, bridge or denture.
Can a new dental implant fail?
Dental implants are intended to restore the smile for a lifetime. However, not everyone is a good fit for dental implants. Without sufficient bone to hold the implant in place, the new dental implant may fail and become loose. This is why it is so important that the dentist evaluates the patient and takes x-rays to look at the bone of the jaw prior to placing the implant. In instances where patients do not have enough bone to place the implant, procedures such as bone grafting may be performed. This builds up the jawbone to prepare it for an implant in the near future. Patients who have implants placed should also closely follow their dentistโs recommendations for care and maintenance to reduce the risk of failure as well.
