Understanding implant-supported dentures?
Unlike traditional full dentures which include false teeth and gums and need to be held in place using denture adhesives, implant-supported dentures use dental implants that are placed along the dental arch. Typically, anywhere between four to six implants are used to hold a more conservative full denture in place. Because the new dentures use the implants as a strong foundation, patients find that their dentures will remain in place and allow them to function reliably with their new restoration.
Who is a good candidate for implant-supported dentures?
The best candidates for these types of dentures are patients who have enough bone structure for the successful placement of dental implants. Without this, the implant procedure may fail. Patients serious about obtaining implant-retained dentures may want to ask their dentist about preparatory procedures to rebuild the bone, such as bone grafting. This can prepare the mouth for the placement of implants in the future, ensuring there is sufficient bone in the jaw to hold the implants. Determining if a patient is a good candidate often starts with a physical evaluation and a series of x-rays to assess the patient’s current oral health and wellness.
